Sergeant Frederick Schlehuber was shot and killed by a rape suspect while questioning the man in the District Attorney's Office in what is now the John Adams Courthouse.
He was sitting with the stepfather of a victim, waiting for a meeting between the district attorney and the suspect, when the suspect suddenly appeared and opened fire. The man shot and killed the stepfather and mortally wounded Sergeant Schlehuber before being subdued by other officers.
Sergeant Schlehuber died while being transported to a local hospital.
The suspect was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life. On November 28, 1919, he was transferred to Bridgewater State Mental Hospital for the criminally insane.
Patrolman Thomas Young, who apprehended the suspect and prevented him from killing more officers, died in the line of duty on January 10, 1912.
Sergeant Schlehuber had served with the Boston Police Department for 9-1/2 years and was assigned to Division 11. He was survived by his wife and one child.
