Officer Sauer was my great grandfather on my father's side. Officer Sauer's daughter, Regina was my father's mother. We grew up knowing the story of his heroic gun battle with two notorious bank robbers from New York. We have a rather extensive account from a local newspaper detailing how Officer Sauer commandeered a private citizen's car and engaged in a shootout with the two robbers while standing on the running board of the car. He chased them and eventually cornered them in an alley but suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach. Although mortally wounded, he managed to hold one of the robbers until help arrived. He passed away in the hospital after suffering from his wound for several days.
May he rest in Eternal Peace.
