Officer W.R. Roberts was shot and killed while on duty near the Iron Mountain Railroad crossing in Monroe.
He and a sheriff's deputy were investigating the theft of 20 head of cattle from the railroad's stockyard. He and the deputy split up so the deputy could ask about the cattle at the local packing house.
As Officer Roberts walked a short distance up the railroad's right of way when he was shot. Despite being wounded, he returned fire, but did not strike his assailant.
The case was never solved.
