Officer Reaves and Officer Fred Claywell were shot and killed while raiding a liquor house. Officer Reaves succumbed to his wounds the following day and Officer Claywell succumbed to his injuries nine days later.
The suspect, shot through the lung by one of the officers, was apprehended at a nearby home a short time later. He was convicted of Officer Reaves' murder and sentenced to death. He was tried a second time, convicted of two counts of second degree murder, and sentenced to 50 years. He died in prison in 1932.
