Detective Harry Raines was shot and killed while questioning suspects about a stolen vehicle.

Detective Raines initiated a traffic stop when the subject exited the vehicle and shot Detective Raines. The man fled the scene and left his two passengers on the side of the road.

The subject was wanted in Tennessee for rape and robbery and thought Detective Raines was attempting to apprehend him. He was arrested in Omaha, Nebraska, by special agents from the FBI, convicted of Detective Raines' murder, sentenced to death, and executed on March 17, 1947.

Detective Raines had served with the Daytona Beach Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, father, three sisters, two brothers, and aunt.
