Captain John Post and two other officers were attempting to apprehend a suspect who had already shot another man over an argument at a crap game.
Captain Post and two other officers were ascending the stairway in an apartment building that the suspect was hiding in at 231 Franklin Street. The man opened fire on them, wounding all three officers. Captain Post succumbed to his wounds later that week. The officers who were able to return fire shot the suspect.
The suspect was later tried and convicted of murder, but died of his wounds after the trial.
Captain Post had served with the Dayton Police Department for 24 years. The Dayton Police FOP lodge is named after Captain Post.
