Constable Robert Poe was shot and killed at 400 Riverside Drive while attempting to arrest a garage owner for the theft of tires.
The suspect indicated he needed to tell his wife something and started to walk away when he suddenly turned and shot Constable Poe twice with a .38-caliber pistol.
Constable Poe's partner struggled with the man, gained control of the weapon, and was able to return fire and kill the suspect.
Constable Poe was survived by his wife and three sons.
