Trooper Clyde Perry was killed during a high-speed pursuit near Columbus in Polk County at 10 am.
Trooper Perry lost control of his vehicle and plunged off the left side of the road, striking a tree. He was transported to St. Luke Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries that evening.
Two men were charged in connection with his death.
Trooper Perry had served with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for five years. He was survived by his wife and daughter.
In August 2000, a portion of Fox Mountain Road was renamed Clyde Stephen Perry Bridge in his honor.
