Special Agent Eugene Pearce succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained two months earlier in Rapides Parish, Louisiana.
He and two other agents were patrolling the roads when they observed a suspected liquor runner. They pursued the vehicle for 12 miles before forcing it off of the road. One of the men fled on foot with Agent Pearce in pursuit.
During the ensuing struggle, Agent Pearce was shot in the left arm and suffered major nerve damage. The wound formed a blood clot which caused his death.
Agent Pearce had served with the Bureau of Prohibition for at least three years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, mother, two brothers, and one sister.
