View all 7 ReflectionsOn this day in 1885, my great grandfather's 22-year-old brother was walking his beat as a rookie patrolman when he heard shots fired. He bravely ran toward the gunfire to investigate and protect others in the area. That call to duty ultimately cost him his life. 128 years ago today, a very young police officer lay dying on the corner of Adams and Halsted. He was not killed instantly, for he was able to get to an alarm box back out on the street before he collapsed, per the Tribune account. After a priest and doctor were summoned to the scene, he was reportedly taken to his parent's home where he died about an hour after being shot. Today is his day of remembrance. Rest in peace, Uncle Mike. You are not forgotten.
