K9 Laika was struck and killed by an automobile while tracking a stolen vehicle suspect at the 3000 block of East Wendover Avenue at 10:30 p.m.

K9 Laika and her handler were called to assist in the apprehension of a juvenile driving a stolen vehicle who fled on foot from a traffic stop. K9 Laika was approximately 30 steps behind the youth when the juvenile dashed across East Wendover Avenue. When K9 Laika followed in pursuit, a vehicle hit K9 Laika.

K9 Laika was transported to an emergency veterinary clinic, where she succumbed to her injuries.

No charges were filed against the driver. The juvenile was apprehended.

K9 Laika had served with the Greensboro Police Department for almost 5 years. During her years of service, K9 Laika was credited with over 90 arrests, was voted best K9 team with her handler five times, and earned the Police Canine of the Quarter Award from the U.S. Police Canine Association.
