K9 Duke was struck and killed by a vehicle while apprehending a man who fled during a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 33 and Diamond Lake Road in Ligonier.

At 1:40 a.m., Officers had stopped a vehicle on U.S. Highway 33 when the driver exited the car and ran. K9 Duke was deployed and prevented the man from fleeing. While officers were subduing the man, a vehicle driving past struck K9 Duke and another officer. Duke was killed instantly. The officer suffered a broken neck and two broken legs.

The man being arrested was charged with resisting arrest and criminal recklessness. No charges were filed against the driver.

K9 Duke had served with the Ligonier Police Department for a year.
