K9 Art was accidentally shot and killed by his handler during a shootout with two juveniles.
His handler had pulled a vehicle over with two juveniles inside. One of the two youths exited the vehicle with a shotgun and fired as K9 Art was released. K9 Art's partner returned fire accidentally striking K9 Art.
In November 1974, the subjects' attorney had a necropsy done on K9 Art and a .45 caliber bullet was removed. The juvenile was then charged with attempted murder.
