Reflections for Police Officer Bryan Scott Hurst

To Bryan's Wife, Daughter & Family:
Words can never really express the deep sorrow felt for your family. I know and understand because we were just there...and still are. We will all get through this together...You have just joined a bigger family that will be there for you all.
May God place peace in your hearts and heal your hurt. One day at a time...

To Officer Bryan:
Thank you for keeping your city safe. Thank you for laying down your life in the most honorable way...you are a true hero!! I am sure that you will be greatly missed by everyone who knew you. Watch over your wife, daughter, family and fellow officers. I know that Bran is with you in heaven showing you around...

Bryan - I am thinking of your family today, today is your funeral, it is a rainy, gloomy day, just as it was for my brother-in-law Brandy's funeral. Ohio has lost another outstanding man. Thank you for your service. I hope you have met Brandy, what a funny, loving man. Tell him we said hey and we miss him. I am proud that you were courageous enough to wear that badge everyday. I wish the monster that did this could have seen what stood behind your badge. I pray for Marissa, your baby and all that you left behind. Rest easy.

I cruised the freeways, far and near,
and patrolled the highways long.
I assisted those in need of help,
and tried to right the wrongs.

I knew my job put me at risk,
thus faith came into call;
I never drove without the Lord.
He was with me through it all.

I didn't want to leave you,
but God said that I must go.
So, I held your love inside me,
and let my spirit flow.

Tell my family, and my friends,
that every thing's okay;
Up here a deputy uses wings,
to cruise the Great Highway.

Teach my children to be proud,
and to not live life in fear.
Tell them Daddy's still on watch,
and that I am always near.

And you, dear wife, remember, please
that true love never dies.
What lives today, within the heart,
lives on in Paradise.

I saw the news as my family sat at dinner the other night. I moved from the table to hear the story...and wished I didn't have to! My family sat quietly because they knew it was important to me...but they, too, wished I didn't have to!

I will think of you and your family as I patrol...and hope I can show the same selfless courage as you!

Be at peace, my brother! God Bless this family!

To the entire Hurst family, I am truly sorry for your tragic loss. I keep praying that line of duty deaths will end but unfortunately they haven't. I know your pain first hand.
To Officer Hurst's daughter, it saddens me that you will never get to truly know your father, but know that he was a hero. To his wife, cherish your memories and know that he is still here in your daughter. This seperation will be hard but will not be everlasting. I will keep you in my prayers.

A POLICE OFFICER’S WIFE

A special kind of woman.
A cut above the rest
Always rating her
among the very best.
How many goodbyes are shouted
without a fond embrace.
As duty steals her man away
for the dangers he must face.
How many meals are ruined
or tender moments disturbed.
All for the call of loyalty
to which her man must serve.
She can push the mower,
or paint a room in need.
How she can stretch a dollar
is a miracle indeed.
She's a mother, a lover,
a chauffeur and a nurse.
A living symbol of the phrase
for better or for worse.
Rich is the man indeed...
That become this Woman's life.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Bryan did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Bryan be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Hurst's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Bryan is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Bryan was well respected and well loved.

Thank you Officer Hurst for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiance Dennis for me.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

God bless you for your fearless acts that tragic day. You offered the ultimate sacrifice to save so many. Gone, but never forgotten...we will always remember.

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

On behalf of the London Police Dept. we want to give our condolences to the Hurst Family. He served his Country as a Marine and a Police Officer. When one of us goes down, it effects us all. The call to become a Police Officer, is the call to serve something greater than ourselves. Bryan answered that call, both as a Marine and a Police Officer. Semper Fi Bro.
