Corporal Myron Massey was shot and killed during a traffic stop on I-20 near the Ensley Avenue exit
Corporal Massey spotted a car suspected of being used in an armed robbery and shooting earlier that night. When he stopped the car at 3:00 a.m., one of the two men inside the vehicle opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Massey.
Both suspects were apprehended. One of the suspects was sentenced to life. The other was sent to a juvenile detention facility, from which he later escaped. After his escape, he was recaptured and sent to the Jefferson Correctional Facility, where he murdered Alabama Department of Corrections Officer William Donaldson on January 12th, 1990, when Officer Donaldson entered a segregation unit to dispense medicine. That suspect later committed suicide.
