My Uncle Detective Vinny Carrera ran major case squad in transit PD. Detective Carrera arrested the killer of irma lozada. I too came in the nypd police academy graduated july 85, assigned to nsu 12 out of the 71st precinct. i shared a locker in the 71 with Officer Herman who gave his life in 1989. Respect and Love for Lozado and Officer Jeff Herman. Once put on that gun and shield, all officers all deserve the same equal protection and consideration. Many don’t get that, shame!

Never met PO Lozada but this story always gets to me. The epitome of bravery, she fearlessly chased and nearly apprehended the suspect. Instead of owning his crime and receiving justice, he instead chose to take her life, which I cannot comprehend. I wish I or someone else could've been there to help her, she didn't deserve that fate. I want her loved ones to know that I respect her bravery and I along with many others owe her a debt of gratitude for making the ultimate sacrifice to protect us from a monster like the one who took her life. Irma, you are an angel, see you on the other side.

40years ago today the world lost a GREAT Police Officer, and her family lost their daughter sister cousin friend.
Irma will always be in my thoughts and prayers. I wasn’t on the job(7/86)when she made the ultimate sacrifice that day but she was someone who was talked about for the many years during my career. Her bravery and fearless spirit and her determination to do a job that honestly not many can do. RIP Irma you truly are my hero as well as all the other cops that made the ULTIMATE sacrifice and gave their lives to make this world better for others.

This coming Saturday, September 21, 2024, will mark the 40 year anniversary of Police Officer Irma Lozada’s line of duty death. Members of the NYPD will honor Irma by placing a wreath at her gravesite at 0930 hours at Calvary Cemetery in Queens.

My father, Detective Ray Porteus Sr, was a detective, Transit Major Case Squad, and remember him talking about the case and the hunt for the perp.

We will never forget Irma’s sacrifice and always keep her memory alive. I have been going to the cemetery for many years and always love to hear stories from folks that knew her or the detectives that worked the case.

Her legacy is carried on by Detective Kate Shamberger, Transit Bureau K9, whose canine Zada is named after.

A relative who is retired NYPD sent me a facebook notification hours after the murder of a 22 yo rookie NYPD officer and his critically injured partner and provided the sparse details available. He concluded his post by attaching a picture of his porch with its light glowing blue.I thought this is an excellent show respect to the murdered officer and his ultimate sacrifice and to display a visual sign to the family of the deceased that we share thwir loss and grief. Whenever a first responder dies a violent death all America suffers the loss. Police agencies could help to emphasize this loss to the public by shining a blue light on an American flag in front of their police station until the hero or heroine is laid to rest.

Was in Fran’s academy class at “Harlem University” located at 155 st and 8th Avenue. A beautiful person inside and out. In the 37 years that have passed since your murder, I have always thought of all the things in life that you have missed out on. Whenever the press talks about how “The Police killed an unarmed man” I think about how your life was ended, after being murdered by an “unarmed man”. RIP Hero, Never Forgotten!
