Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer II Filberto Henry Cuesta, Jr.

Hi Cousin Fil. It's been along time, but I was thinking of you lately. Just reflecting on things. Family reunions, meeting Sylvia and the girls. It's been too long. I havent seen Cousin Filbert and Rosie either. You'll always be remembered for you heroism. You are missed and loved by so many. This month is the aniversary of your passing. 17 years. I remember Sam was 2 yrs. old and Sierra was just born. Time flew. Cousin, say hi to my mom, dad and my sister, Maya for me okay. Wish we would have spent more family time together. Love Evie

Yo, Brah;

Okay, that was a bit “eerie.”;

Tonight (August 22, 2015), I was thinking about You. Then I decided to visit this ODMP Site and saw the date of Your senseless murder. Then it dawned upon me that (without realizing it), less than twenty-four hours before this year‘s anniversary (sic), I had posted a photograph of Your Memorial located at Southwest Station, on several of my Facebook sites.

Later (still not realizing the anniversary date), I ended-up communicating (via the internet), with one of Your Fellow LAPD Recruit Class Classmates, and we discussed You. She told me how She actually thought about “Quitting LAPD,” and how seeing You right before they removed You from Life Support “will be embedded in Her mind and heart forever.” She told me how She has long worn A Memorial Bracelet In-Your-Honor. She also told me how She makes it a point to tell ALL of Her LAPD Recruit Classes about You.

I must be “getting-old.”-----My former LAPD Recruits are now doing what I used to do, when I taught Your Class, and You have A Daughter who graduated from high school this year. It is a bit difficult to believe that it has been seventeen years since Chief Daryl F. Gates (RIP) had to “play babysitter” for my two Cowpokes, so that I could tell the Long Beach Press-Telegram reporter how Proud I was to have been one of Your Instructors…

(May You Rest - In - Peace, Brah, knowing that You are most-certainly NOT forgotten…..)

Semper Fi,
“Major Pain”

My dearest Filly: tomorrow our baby girl graduates from high school. I know you would be so proud of our little girl. Today Gary went to SAMs school and gave her your bracelet that you would wear in memory of your good friend Kevin Esnault. Gary held on that bracelet for 17 years. He wanted to give it to her when she graduated from high school. He met Parker and thought he was a really good kid. He said you would be proud . Tomorrow will be so hard for us to do this without you . Sam left a message for your dad I hope he makes it. Sam really wants his grandpa Cuesta at her graduation. Today out baby Sierra passed her driving test!!!! I know you were right there with her. Thank you Heavenly Father for taking the wheel and guiding our baby Sierra rose. AAA insurance is going to love us.

Today our baby turned 18 years old. It was a bitter sweet day. Our little Sammy lutu your little sheeta (short for mamasita or mama sheeta like you used to say) Sam had a slumber party with all of her closest girlfriends . They sat in the backyard roasted marshmallows and made s'mores . They watched movies and just laughed all night long. They finally all fell asleep. Our dog Max is sleeping with all of the girls lol. Parker came over and gave Sam flowers,cookie cake and tickets to an Angel game. He is so cute he spells the A in her name with a halo. : ) I bought Sam the cutest two tiered cake in pink ( of course )with rubber duckies and bubbles ( lol) she will always be our baby girl . I wish you were here with us to celebrate this special day. I bought Sam a perfume ,movie tickets , 4 concert tickets to go see Brandon flowers from the killers and a beautiful Bible I signed it from Mommy and Daddy from heaven . I hope sam will always keep gods word and hold on to gods promises as she takes the next step in her life as an adult. Dear Lord please watch over our baby girl ..guide her and protect her. Until we see each other again...love you buddies til the end!

Dear Fil

I know you were there with her every step of the way. Sierra made it to the top 50 and then the top 25 and she made it to the interviews now we just have to wait to see if she gets chosen there are only A few girls who made it. Sierra was in the interview room for about 45 minutes I think they loved her. They asked her what was one of her greatest challenges and she said growing up without a father that made me so sad. I thought it was great though when she said why she wanted to be a lifeguard she said because I would like to save lives the way my father did. I know you are proud of our beautiful baby girl. She has your heart and spirit and carries it with her everywhere she goes whatever she does. Good night my love

My dearest Fil,

Please watch over our baby girl as she competes today at Huntington Beach. I get so worried when she swims in the ocean. Push her along my love and protect her. She has so much heart and determination. She will have to swim out in the cold ocean and back in under 20 minutes then run in the sand

My Dearest love:
It's almost 2 am and I can't sleep. Tomorrow our Baby girl will apply to the University. I am filled with joy,excitement and a sense of emptiness that you are not here to share this beautiful time with us. Can you believe that her daughter is actually applying to go to a university? She is applying to UCLA Cal State Fullerton Cal State Long Beach your alma mater and UC Santa Barbara. Please watch over our baby girl. I hope you are proud . I wish you were here to meet Sammy's first boyfriend Parker. You would love him he is so sweet and respectful. Please watch over Sammy as she is driving. Sierra took her drivers permit and passed on her first time. I still have to take Sierra driving,however she seems very hesitant. I had a dream of you the other night and it seems so real you asked me so many questions about our girls and it made me so happy. I think God allows me to have those dreams to give me peace and to remind me that you are always here with us. You are my best friend and we love you

My dearest Fil
Today marks 16 years without you. A day doesn't go by that I don't think of you when I look at the girls. You live in them. They are you. Sam had a great time at girls state this year. Sierra made varsity water polo ...they call them the Cuestas and coach calls Sierra little Cuesta .
Can you believe Sam will be a senior and Sierra a junior? The girls survived their outward bound course in the thunderstorms . I knew you were right there beside them keeping them safe. I woke up to many messages from your partners today. Put a big smile on my face . Jaime took girls to am artic monkeys concert this week they had a blast. We miss you so much. I still hear your laugh. I love you Sylvia

My dearest Fil-
I have so much to tell you. Can you believe our baby SAM is driving? Watch over her. I always tell her she has guardian angels watching over her. Sierra says she is in no hurry to start driving. I am going to encourage her to take the written test and then I'll go from there. Girls continue to play water polo. Sam made varsity and Sierra is on jv. Christmas was exciting this year. Nepo and Gary bought the girls southwest crash jackets with the crash logo and it reads"welcome to the jungle!" The girls were so excited. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and wish you were enjoying watching your girls grow up. Aaron is up in San Fran for college. Watch over him. Jacob is almost done with pharmacy school and Annie will soon be going to high school. I am working full time now and I love it. Kids are wonderful. Someday I'll get to tell you all of my stories in person.
Missing you today...
Love Sylvia

I didn't know Officer Cuesta personally but I was a young boy at 14 years old when I was with the Callahan family on vacation in California when they got the call about Officer Cuesta being shot. I remember going to the hospital with the Callahan family and being a young boy I was very confused on what was going on as I never had to attend this type of situation. But still at that young age my heart did hurt for the family. I just got done watching the movie End of Watch and it made me think of Officer Cuesta's incident, so I did some research and came across this page. To the family of Officer Cuesta, may he continue to watch over you all.
