Reflections for Police Officer Brendan J "Joe" McGarry
I met your son and namesake at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial this week. We traded challenge coins and I saw that he had a cartoon version of you attached to his lanyard. He told me a little bit about you and I remarked about how the numher of your FOP lodge--317--was appropriate for a fellow Irishman.
I looked you up when I got back to the hotel, and then I saw your son again at the service. He was making sure people were taken care of, helping them out of the sun and giving them cold water. He recognized me, and I told him I had looked you up. He mentioned that in addition to all the children of your own that you raised, you had something like 150 foster children in and out of your house.
When he spoke of you, he spoke with such love and pride. I want to let you know that I will remember him and you always. I get the feeling he's a lot like you were, judging by how solicitous he was and how he was looking out for everybody. That's a rare quality in a human being and I bet you are as proud of him as he is of you.

When I think of PO Brendan “Joe” McGarry I am humbled and honored to not only call him a brother in blue, but I was fortunate enough to be considered a friend. He told me that I was family. His family. I learned many things from Joe, but one of the most important things I ever learned from him was that we are here for each other and as long as I breathe, I will try to live life each day as he lived it!
