Officer Horan, our world is full of evil people, and yet, for many years, you dedicated your life to protecting others that they may be safe. Our Lord, who sees all and knows all, will reward you abundantly for your courage, dedication and selfless service. My heart breaks for the sorrow that your loved ones are experiencing. May God immerse you and them in His Divine Mercy. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant.

There's a story in the Coast Guard, as old as the service is. It has been retold over the centuries in many ways, but the story remains the same....

A grizzled old sea captain stood on a wind swept beach in the middle of a blowing gale. His eyes could just barely see the tattered sails of a ship being driven ashore in the violent storm. The captain said a silent prayer as he knew that the crew of the stricken ship was doomed. Little did he know that the local United States Coast Guard crew had already sprung into action.

Soon enough, over the dunes the captain spotted the Coasties limbering their lifeboat towards the scene. The captain watched as the unrelenting sea continued to break the ship apart. No human being could survive long enough to reach that stricken schooner. This made no different to the Coast Guardsmen as they went about readying their craft to launch.

The captain ran to the crew and told them that they would be going to a certain death if they even attempted to launch out into the storm. Without stopping, one of the lifesavers turned to the captain and said these words that have gone down in Coast Guard history, "The regulations say that we've got to go out, but nothing says we have to come back."

Thank God for the dedication of Police Officer Michael Horan. When faced with his final call, did not hesitate, but went out. In a world full of warriors, something in our DNA causes Coasties to be protectors. Thank you Sir for protecting your community from those that only know how to steal, kill and destroy. What the enemy has meant for evil has been turned to good.

I will continue to pray for your wife, children and family.

Mike, you and I used to butt heads a lot. We’d trash talk each other every time we saw one another. But I never once questioned our mutual respect for one another. You were my brother in blue and my brother in arms. I’ll miss you dearly puddle pirate. Godspeed.

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.
