Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Kenneth Jeffrey Johnson

My family and I would like to express our deepest appreciation to Cpl Johnson and his family for his ultimate sacrifice for the people of South Carolina. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

FTO Matthew Sisler
Mount Pleasant Police Dept. SC

I did not have the opportunity to ever meet Cpl Johnson, but I felt the pain of his loss like every other Trooper and law enforcement officer. We do not like to think about it, but we know that each day when we leave home it may be the last time we see our loved ones on earth. My family and I want to convey to Cpl Johnson's family that we are praying for them, and that the law enforcement community will be here to support them. I am also going to leave a copy of a poem that was read at Eric Nicholson's funeral. It had such an impact upon me that I carry it with me everywhere I go.

The policeman stood and faced his God
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as neatly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my Church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said
No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us that carry badges
Can't always be a Saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my walk was rough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the street are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook in fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among these people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't… I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne
Where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the Judgement of his God.

"Step forward now policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

As a retired Officer and step-mother of Ptl. Wayne A. Leon,#1338, killed on duty 6-25-00, I send both my love and understanding to the family of Corporal Johnson. My son was killed during a traffic stop and I have come to realize that his death is not about his not being careful, he was a very fine Officer, just as Cpl. Johnson. It is about 2 fine men who, while doing an often thankless job, were killed by heartless people. Each of these fine men leave behind a wife and children. Each, whose life and legacy will live in those children and all of us who loved them. We will all go on living in a world of good and bad, yet made better by fine men and women who gave the ultimate. They will forever live in our hearts and in our souls.
God bless you all.

Trooper Johnson now patrols the streets of heaven, may this fact comfort the family, friends and co-workers. Well served Peace Officer, may you rest in peace.

May the memories of your loved one and those special times you shared together be of comfort to you now and in the days ahead...bring peace to your heart. Our daughter is an officer for North Charleston Police Dept. Yes, we worry for her as you did you for your husband. If I we can be of any assistance to you and your family,,,, please don't hesitate to call.

I leave you with this poem:

"My Friend, Take My Hand"

I cannot ease your aching heart,
Nor take your pain away,
But let me stay and take your hand
And walk with you today.

I'll listen when you need to talk,
I'll wipe away your tears,
I'll share your worries when they come,
I'll help you face your fears.

I'm here and I will stand by you,
Each hill you have to climb.
So take my hand, let's face the world...
Live one day at a time.

You're not alone, for I'm still here...
I'll go that extra mile,
And when your grief is easier,
I'll help you learn to smile!!

With upmost sympathy,

To the family of Corporal Johnson, we are so very sad for this senseless unhuman shooting. This is the way of life for many of the officers from all over the country & cowards run into the justice system. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family and co-workers during this time. GOD BLESS

I am once again saddened to read about another Law Enforcement brother losing his life by the senseless and violent act of a criminal. Trooper Johnson, no longer will you have to patrol the streets of Hell. You can now take your place in Heaven. May God comfort and watch over your wife and two children. May God also comfort your other family members, friends, and fellow troopers of the South Carolina HP during this time of tradegy. Rest in Peace Trooper Johnson.

The Rao family was deeply saddened to hear that another officer lost his life protecting the citizens of South Carolina. We will hold the Johnson family in our thoughts and prayers. We have found the law enforcement community to be a terrific support system, whom we have leaned on heavily. May God continue to bless your family as you cope in the coming days ahead!

From July of 1992 to July of 1995, I had the pleasure of working in the same county as Trooper Johnson. Being a Deputy with Berkeley County put me in touch with the troopers there. Cpl. Johnson was a professional and dedicated trooper who always did a great job. He shared many hilarious stories of his career with us which made his sense of humor sparkle! He truly loved his job. This is how I will remember Cpl. Kenneth Johnson.

May God Bless You All.

A fallen friend first, a brother with a badge second. One who has paid the price so that others may have peace, freedom and a sense of security. He gave what no donation, allowance, policy or contribution could ever come close to paying for. Look and care for his family as he did for so many others. See ya at headquarters bro!

Family and Friends,
I want you to know that my family is praying for you. I wish that I had magic words to ease your heartache and make all the pain go away. As you face each day without him just know that you have an extended family that loves you and relates to your sadness. We will always be there for you and know that we will never forget.
