Reflections for Deputy Sheriff David William March

When God Made Peace Officers

When the Lord was creating peace officers, He was into his sixth day of overtime. An angel appeared and said,"You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said,"Have you ever read the specs on this order? A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, and enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch and not wrinkle his uniform. He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stake out, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses and testify in court the next day. He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said,"Six pairs of hands, no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me all the problems," said the Lord,"it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"Thats the standard model?" asked the angel.
The lord nodded. "One pair that sees through a bulge on a pocket before he asks,'May I see what's in there, sir?' (when he already knows and wishes he had taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of his head for his partner's safety. And another pair of eyes here in the front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say,'you'll be alright ma'am,' when he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve,"rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't," responded the Lord,"I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."
The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly. "Can it think," she inquired.
"You bet," declared the Lord with pride. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search and arrest a gang member in the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop, and still keeps a sense of humor. This officer also has phenomenal personality control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace officer,"There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"Thats not a leak," said the Lord,"it's a tear."
"What's the tear for," asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, and for justice."
"You're a genius," proclaimed the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there," He said.

My heart and prayers go to the March family. To the men and women of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, be strong. Somehow, God provides a way to go back out and do the job you have been trained to do. One of my best friends, Billy Walls of the Jessamine County(Ky) Sheriff's Department, was killed in the line of duty by gunfire, November 13, 2001. Like Billy, Deputy March died a hero. But Deputy March was a hero before he ever left us, because he put on the badge and uniform and went out and made the world a safer place for someone every day.
God's Speed Deputy David March.

BLUE AUTUMN
By: Marc A.Turner Copyright/2000

That day was like others nothing special at all
We passed one another said hi in the hall
We took it for granted that nothing would change
But then, time seemed to gel, it felt surely strange

Suddenly the news struck with lightening heat
Officer down, my heart skipped a beat
See we’re all brothers that hang from the same family tree
But today, it was your turn; your leaf was blown free

We finally break rank and most walk away
They turn to look back, just a few there still stay
The ones from your squad still stand by and stare
Not able to leave, a pain they all share

The crowd is all gone and the wind shakes the trees
The tears start to fall like the dry autumn leaves
Why was it you and not one of them?
A question they’ll ask again and again

So now when we see our brother go by
Why not take a second to say more than just hi
Tomorrow might be too late, don’t you see
Who’s leaf will be next… blown from the tree…?

David,

I saw the breaking news on TV yesterday just as I sat down to eat lunch. I saw your patrol car alongside the curb - lights on, driver door ajar... & then I saw the huge amount of blood spilled on the asphalt in front of your black & white. A sick feeling came over me immediately. The news reporter said you had been shot in the face & chest several times, & the suspect fled in his car. They said you had been transported to the hospital in grave condition, & I knew it was bad.

I learned this morning that you'd passed on, so when I put on my uniform this morning, I affixed the black band around my badge in your honor. I wear it as a tribute to you, & to all those in uniform who've been called home before you.

Even though I never knew you, I still want to thank you for helping to make Southern California a safer place. Thank you for your service, & ultimately for giving your life. You will surely be missed, but you will never be forgotten. God bless your wife & family.

I have been coming to this website since November 13,2001, when Deputy Sheriff Billy Ray Walls III was shot and killed in the line of duty. Billy and I started our law enforcement careers together as dispatchers at the University of Kentucky Police Department. Many times, during "hot" situations, we would climb the walls, wanting to be out in the action, instead of sitting in dispatch. As the years went by, Billy seemed to be a magnet for the "heavy stuff", and loving every minute of it. We never know when we leave for work whether we will come home, that is a part of the job and we all know that...to the family, friends, and fellow law enforcement brothers and sisters of Deputy March, he will be remembered as a hero by all of you, keep your memories close to your heart and he will never be far away. He is patrolling streets of gold with the finest law enforcement officers God ever made...My prayers will be with all of you at the most difficult time in a law enforcement family. Isaiah 40:31
