Border Patrol Agent Ricardo Salinas and Border Patrol Agent Susan Rodriguez were shot and killed after a vehicle pursuit in Cameron County, Texas.
They were assisting a local agency in trying to stop suspects who had just committed another murder. A Cameron County sheriff's deputy was also critically wounded during the shootout.
The three agents were re-entering their cruisers when the suspect came out of a cornfield and ambushed them in the area of Gamble Road and E Hudson Road. None of the agents had time to return fire. The suspect was then taken into custody after a gunfight with several other officers at the scene and died later in the day from his wounds.
Agent Salinas had served with the Border Patrol for one year. He was survived by his parents and sister.

View all 54 ReflectionsStill thinking of you Ricky & Susan but the days have finally moved on & its not always July 7, 1998 anymore. I still see you Susan coming in with extra work pants to give to me so that I wouldn't have to buy any. I have no idea why but I start thinking of you both before July 7th because Ricky we went to Apple B as a class a lot after our classes at the border. If it has been 26 years why is it I still see you both as if we are all at that darn crowded station?! You talked a lot & I should have listened more. You wouldn't believe it but I believe in people who have foretelling dreams like you. You guys were the best. I am so sure Attaway & Wilson are patrolling the border with you guys. You are still the Green Angels we don't deserve. Ricky Ricardo, and beautiful Susan thank you so much!
