Reflections for Police Officer Joseph R. Garcia

After the police academy, and a few months before this tragedy I was assigned to the 6th Pct and got to know Joe. I was on duty that tragic day, and all were in shock and disbelief.

Not long after, approx. 2,500 cops were laid off due to NYC's financial crisis. About 30 months later I was re-hired and re-assigned to the 6th Pct. I can say Joe's memory lived on. Many of us participated in the annual benefit basketball game named after out fallen brother.

Losing a brother officer is hard enough, but more so, when working side by side in the same precinct.

Joe was like by all, and may he rest in peace.

You were always "larger than life" to those of us who worked with you 30 years ago. It was our honor to have been able to do so. You are one of the great cops of New York. Thanks you looking after the rest of us all these years.

I never cried so much in my whole life at the time....and I was not alone... I recall hearing the NYPD Chaplain comment to a colleague that he had never seen so many officers so upset before.

It was so many years ago and I was so young your memory is kept alive by family and by yoru co workers. They have continuously supported and celebrated your life over and over. We are all so grateful for that.

Thank you,

I worked with Joe for many years in the 6th Pct. He & his partner Eddie were assigned the connecting patrol sector. (6 C~CHARLES) You could always depend on them to back you up. Joe was a great cop and a pleasure to work with. It's almost 30 yrs since he was taken away from us on that dreadful day.
You are not forgotten, even today. If you look up in the evening sky, you'll see a bright light shinning. That's the light of God's love reflecting off of Joe's Shield as he patrols in '6 Charlie.'
