Reflections for Police Officer William Coleman Cook
We say good evening and thank you God for allowing us to have fun. We're happy You've created all beings, plants, the stars, the sun and the moon. The trees survive the seasonal changes. The rain and snow falls, the leaves change their color. But we know God is around us at all times directing our every movement toward endeavor. God lives in us, we clap hands and praise Your great and awesome name. Every time we either open or close our eyes we are grateful. We love our dear friends and colleagues from our chosen fields of work. You loved your friends, Officer Cook, they admired and revered you. You were one of the most respected officers during your watch. This was accentuated on mutual trust and loyalty. Your faithfulness, your pleasantness, your integrity and dignity when consolidated with your honesty, bravery, valor and courage offered you the opportunity to patrol a venue, Dade County and give the residents the best choices and chances at being unified, at peace with one another and free from tension and turmoil. Outstanding work along with your humbly and humanely stellar character. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The sun continues to shine, the moon stays aglow because of your most swift and heroic actions of May 16, 1979.

May You Our Protector and Savior lead us from day to night and from night back to day. The sun goes down, the night and stars appear in the heavens above. Our families relax and then go to sleep. Some prefer to work days, others prefer working nights. Police officers and some other professions don't give their employees choices. If you have to work days, you work days, if you have to labor under the stars, then that is what you have to do to earn a living. Our Creator knows what is deemed proper for us. He leads us down the paths of life that He feels we will succeed. He satisfies us and renews us with vigor and strength to behold. As we are all taught, most of us that is, each new day is a test, a challenge to see where we are and what befits us. You looked at each day as a Metro-Dade Police officer, Officer Cook and sized up the various situations that were assigned to you and a partner if that particular day you rode with one. We never seem to be able to comprehend the complex matters in life. We only want at times to gravitate to that one moment. Every moment of your outstanding life and upstanding career was calculated on how you could make the citizens safer, more secure and to deliver serenity to a community where you were known and respected for your dignity and bravery. If only Mr. Pearsall, the young troubled man who took your life and dashed all your future hopes, plans and dreams had only contemplated his actions before he acted evilly upon them. Our Lord only knows that answer and the reasons behind his wicked motivations. You my neighbor, friend and hero acted with humility as you always did. Your bravery, courage and valor went well beyond the bounds of duty, it only brought a tense community I want to believe that much more closer. Though it should not have taken the ultimate sacrifice of a young and superbly splendid public servant who only functioned within the means of logic and sound thought planning. You remain a humble Godsend to all and a most beloved hero to your family, colleagues and many close friends who admired your wisdom, wit, charm and maturity beyond your twenty-five years. Rest in peace. Those stars indeed shine brighter tonight and every night because of our many brave women and men like yourself, Officer Cook, who were stable, unshaken and unwavering in their professional convictions. To see justice dispensed properly and fairly was your number one priority. This is every officer's motto or mantra. This is the truth and nothing but the truth.

We praise the God who allows us to rest and to dream as peace quiets our beings. At night when we retire, the aches and pains we suffer from abate a bit. In the morning when we awaken, we see Your everlasting spirit as its presence abounds within us. Make us realize the value of our time on this earth to accomplish our daily chores and work which is essential to both our survival and to our families. Reconcile us to remember the past, the past, the present and the future. You who nourish our bodies with food and drink in order to serve You with the proper reverence, allow those who have labored in honor, dignity and courage who have passed from this world to rest with honor, integrity and a renewed valor. From dawn until dusk did you, Officer Cook, labor and toiled mightily on Dade County's behalf. Your service was one of distinction, quality, proper moral standards, devotion and a profound determination to allow peace, liberty and unity to line up against each other as do the residents who cherish their health and prosperity. You were the best and you should rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. A career built on quality and reliance. Never to be forgotten for your heroic actions on May 16, 1979. So much more was left for you to achieve, Officer Cook. Your family is carrying out your legacy and all its aspirations left unfinished. You would be extremely proud of them!

Repercussions come at times without a profound sense of reliability, resourcefulness and responsibility. No one ever for once doubted your ability to succeed, Officer Cook. Police officers always have to think and remain aware of their surroundings at all times. Violence against law enforcement has these reverberations that can lead to serious consequences beyond even the most highly trained officers capabilities. We seek to create a bond of hope, of optimism that always stays enhanced within the communities where they patrol with braveness, courageousness and valor. All of these traits can be surely validated by their proper ethical behavior while maintaining honesty, dignity and integrity while staying the course of impartiality. You were the very best at helping and preserving the peace, unity and liberty of all Dade County residents and this won't ever be forgotten. The torch of inspiration has been lit and continues to illuminate itself this day. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Officer William C. Cook has fondly been remembered for being concerned, wonderful and caring.

We speak in God's presence and thank Him for the life he has given us. Bless the name of the Lord who divides day and night, with knowledge opens the gates of judgment. The times and seasons change for a reason, with awe and reverence do we take notice of the constellations at nightfall. Morning, the sun comes up, at dusk it goes down and the big blue and white moon appears. The wonders and mysteries of life eternal we observe them right before our own two eyes. We seek intelligence to begin to comprehend the what, why and hows of life. Why do we live and what is our goal or missions while we are alive? You brought a sense of vision and awareness, Officer Cook. You set out to be successful and never once wavered from your commitment. For this you shall be saluted. Your young life and most dignified career shall be celebrated forever, this is what you meant to all citizens. Enlightening, endearing and engaging, characteristics of a well lived life, all this is sorely missed today. God has His treasured and very cherished angels of enlightenment, endearment and engagement. Three words that go perfectly together with honor, dignity and integrity. The other three words, bravery, courage and valor too fit the profile of what is expected from all human beings no matter their chosen line of work or professional endeavor. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

At night we lay down to the stars above. Morning we arise by the light of day. The Creator of all light, give us the intellect to distinguish between day and night. The lamp that You have lit shall stay that way forever. The torch you lit, Officer Cook, shall surely stay lit for all that you meant to Dade County residents and their serenity. A humble and most respected hero, your soul does shine as brightly as those stars that twinkle at night. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. God directs the movements of all celestial beings for a purpose. You took direction, Officer Cook and with your abilities there was no doubt how fine an officer you would become. Your presence was the beacon by which all future officers are being judged. Your smile and charm was so endearing, it's a crying shame all that transpired nearly thirty-six years ago. The power of persuasion can be a tremendous resource for any police officer, yours, Officer Cook, was a truly special gift that not too many people possess. Badge#1664 meant something to your family, colleagues and friends. It was worn with solid integrity, dignity and professional commitment. Lights in our homes can stay illuminated because of your unwavering and unselfish goal of excellence and bravery beyond reproach.

Remembering you, Officer Cook, for your love of nature, your photogenic hobbies were a source of pride, as they were a way for you to relax and look at things with another lens. Beauty should not be wasted nor made fun of as it is an integral part of our lives. As we listen and heed the messages coming from your soul in heaven, let us pay very close attention to the wisdom that endeared you to your family, your comrades and many close personal friends. It was passed on to so many others. All the heartfelt care, love and compassion you exhibited and gave to all should be shared for the ages. Your maturity can be passed down and one needs to understand that indeed silence is golden. It's not a complex science to weave our way through. You did it my neighbor, friend and hero quite masterfully and it never steered you wrong. Rest in peace. By the way Mrs. Cook, I looked up your birthday of September 17, 1915, you were born on a Friday, our Sabbath eve and the eve of one of our most sacred holidays, the Day of Atonement also called Yom Kippur. You should live and be well, now I can possibly note your faithfulness and spirituality.

At twilight we take time out for sharing, caring and remembering. The two worlds, this world and the next world crisscross and join together as one. War and bloodshed, violence and hatred have no place in this world. Only peace, freedom and unity can take their rightful places on center stage. All of these characteristics are supposed to happen it's just not always when we want them to occur. Memories of good people who we cared about are shared with all who listen. It's their lamps that stay eternally lit for those to remember. The next world is composed of darkness, but when you have heroes and heroines about God's golden angels, you realize His streets we be well looked after. Exactly why you're now and forever among these guardian angels, Officer Cook, who with a steady stream of optimism, bravery and courage did you keep us safe and secure. The dignity, honesty and integrity has maintained those lights burning and shining off your treasured soul. And one never to be forgotten for your entire effort. Violence should not have ended your life and career way too soon as there was more left for you to accomplish. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. No matter the time of day or night you'll always be well respected and thought of. Dusk, dawn nighttime or daytime you were there for all Dade County residents.

I meant to say, Officer Cook, You bring us life and we should rise as swift as a lion. And it was those comrades who worked with you and helped to battle evil with you everyday. Events of violence illustrate lunacy. Meaning evil no matter how hard you try to take a bite out of it, it still continue to rear its ugliness. As police officers ponder and attempt to grab hold of this monster, we should keep in mind the positives and negatives, try to stay the course and to accentuate the most optimistic outcome in which no more further escalation of bloodshed occurs. Your kindred my neighbor, friend and hero, along with your valor and dignity assisted you in a far more greater manner. Rest in peace. Those taking over your watch now have a more enhanced role than ever and they need not only the citizens helping out, they require the same amount of honor, moral conduct and an entire code of ethics as you so faithfully established during your career. The craziness of this world has us all bent out of shape at times, but when things get rough, you must not give up the war. Keep applying the pressure, sooner or later the good guys and gals, the police officers will be victorious.

Beloved King of all creation, through the sunlight and many waves of the many bodies of water, You brings us life, peace and joy to all living spirits in this world. Your make holy our beings in order for us to serve You properly with trust and an everlasting faith, with resolve to live and to prosper the correct manner. When we get up from our slumber, let us rise with pleasure and the swiftness of a lion. If we shall stumble, help lift us back up to our feet to continue our pursuits and journeys of life so valuable. Earth brings us life and God returns our souls and beings back from where they came from. A birth and one's passing from this world come nearly each moment, sometimes there is no time to prepare or to say a fitting goodbye. The things we work for give us the strength and fortitude to bless You and for the grace by which we should be thankful. Officer Cook, as a man of faith, a man of humility, one who believed in proper morals and ethical behavior, you set out with your compass pointed in the right direction of honesty, dignity and integrity and these essentials carried you throughout your days, months and years as a public servant who went out to patrol Dade County streets with diligence and a vision of valor and vigilance. A blessing and a humble Godsend, you have been missed terribly by your devoted family members, police colleagues and personal friends that both you and Karen acquainted yourselves with. The street sign, the stained glass window, the brick at Tropical Park in Miami, along with your name engraved on the marble wall with your other fallen comrades are the signs of a well lived life heroically lived and a police career carried out with perseverance and calm ringing from your lips. Never to be forgotten. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Your upstanding character and feats of humanity are there for all to take notice of. A legacy to be perpetuated for generations to come. You set the bar high, now it's up to us to maintain its standard of quality and excellence.

May everything from our homes be pleasant and beautiful. From our feet to our heads, from where we walk, think and produce achievement. Our beds where we retire at night to relax and all above us may it be pleasant too. As long as you were out on patrol, Officer Cook, how could things have gone wrong. Tragically, for all your resolve and spirit of calm, things went wrong on May 16, 1979, a day never to be forgotten for your family, friends and comrades who you went out to battle evil with each day. Your actions were outstanding as was your courage, commitment and bravery, over and beyond was is asked from every police officer. Dade County residents with an everlasting certainty will always cherish you and remember the kind-hearted human being that you were and will forever remain. Life goes on, but not before pausing to look back at your heroism humbly accomplished. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The entire police world grieved over your loss. The all too soon sadness of a young life that had so much more to give back and to achieve taken before your time. God only knows. If we the ordinary citizen only knew why? There was no "scardy cat" in you, only fighting for peace, justice and liberty until your last breath. We go on breathing and enjoying life because of the ultimate sacrifice that you made. You delivered only top notch, high quality service born of stellar character.

I meant to say Officer Cook, that to accomplish is not to be scared, as well as being devout which you were. To be scared is one who perhaps does not attempt something positive. At least my neighbor, friend and hero you were not timid and fearful. You faced situations and danger head on, you did not runaway on May 16, 1979. You were right at the heart of that domestic disturbance in Liberty city showing your comrades, your family and all your friends just life is about. The courage to commit, the bravery to act swiftly and the valor that was not vacated, only thing to say is your actions were exemplary. Rest in peace. I apologize, you were not scared or afraid. I might be that, you surely were not. Your held your head high and all of us were mighty proud of you.

To live is to be blessed. To accomplish and to be devout is one who is scared. We are all encompassed by just one God and that one God rules over all four corners of this universe. We dance when happy. We shed tears when we are sad and at times when we are elated. The hidden mysteries of life unfolding are all around us just as you were proud and happy when you donned your police uniform for the very first time, Officer Cook. How happy can one's parents be when their children achieve their lifelong dreams? You take your humility and when coupled with valor, honesty, integrity and a profound sense of caring and compassion, now that's the making of a truly successful officer or whatever you endeavor to become. Your proud life and profession, Officer Cook, that you aspired to become has blazed the trails for many other highly motivated individuals who aspire to become part of the fraternity. A well liked and respected man of wisdom and maturity, rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. You are an inspiration of humbleness to be revered and remembered forever. Your legacy stands as an everlasting tribute to your patience and perseverance. We, even those who did not know you personally were still blessed by your presence and it can be felt from faraway.

How beautiful are the orchards full of fruit to partake of. All made possible by the God, Creator of heaven and earth. Our beings sing with glee for all that we have. We give thanks to You O Lord for all You do for our behalf. As we live each new day, our bodies and souls sing their praises to You. We are likened to those orange fields in that they yield what is planted and we reap what we sow. Officer Cook, with your smile as bright as one of those oranges, you were one of the many talented and courageous heroes and heroines of your time. Although, it was many decades ago, you still have not ever be forgotten, only loved by your devoted family members and welcomed with open arms into God's eternal shelter where you now serve an even more vital role and that is to keep watching over those brave men and women who serve and protect us the the very same quality of both character and humble distinction. Your loyalty and faithfulness are the main virtues of your well lived life, sadly, cut way too short by violence and a career built on the models of honor, dignity and integrity. God gives us a blueprint, it is up to us to act accordingly and to conduct our affairs as such. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. Police officers are always willing to listen and hopefully give us both sound and sage advice.

Tragedies have a way of temporarily short circuiting our best laid plans. Families have to deal with a plethora of mixed emotions. Police departments go through these emotions as they lay their brave brothers and sisters to rest. It is their unwavering free spirit, their boldness to act out of courage to best serve and protect those that they took an affirmation to serve. Courtesies and the act of courage which they must make part of their heroic nature always takes its place whenever police officers act in a friendly and respectful fashion. Officer Cook, your positive approaches to life, your solid career and whatever you set out to accomplish can only be embellished by your humble nature as a humanely valiant public servant. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. As Chief of all heavenly angels, now you, Officer Cook, have taken your rightful place where your soul may navigate wherever Our Creator feels a need for it to go.

Dedication to duty, devotion to one's colleagues all begins at home. Your truly home abode, Officer Cook, where both you and Nancy were the apples of your parents eyes was the genesis of how you grew up and maintained your dignity which in turn led to your destiny of becoming a police officer. We all dream. We all aspire. We try to inspire others into doing what God has instilled in us to do the right thing. You were a truly deserving man, yet you worked like most people do to get from one place, one point to another. A deliverer of liberation and resolve through your integral resourcefulness, you'll not be forgotten for having performed a job must would not dare to go near. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero, devoted, endearing, determined, intuitive, outstanding and nice to all people, the citizens of Dade County have always spoken very highly of you. That proverbial apple did not fall far from the tree. We should all take firm hold of that apple!

In life as we comprehend it, there are no certainties. But, with a little ingenuity and foresight we can overcome any obstacles that may lie ahead and conquer that which we may deem impossible to achieve. Your ability, Officer Cook, to avoid trouble in life and for most of your police career was the direct result of your righteous upbringing by your devoted parents and the inherent integrity, dignity and honesty that followed you all your life and as a faithfully determined Metro-Dade Police Officer. Heroines and heroes who sacrifice and lay their sacred lives down for our benefit and for the community's freedom, peace and unity do belong to us for eternity and should be saluted as you will always be, Officer Cook, until those you loved and who in turn loved and treasured you have been reunited as you carefully patrol God's golden streets where no evil can ever harm you again. You laid the road ahead for those succeeding you in watching and serving. The torch you have lit will remain permanently lit so that we can all view the brightness of your ever loving soul. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. The passing of a loved one can only enhance their contributions to society as this serves as their everlasting legacy among all people inhabiting this world. You will always be remembered and celebrated for your distinct care, compassion and liberation of all citizens.

Be like a tree in your pursuits of life and a career. Stand firm, be confident, do not boast, look to God above, the winds of reason and logic that blow from all directions and utilize tranquility when necessary and you will achieve. When you walk or run, do so with a sense of pride and proper motivation. Remember, one reaps what they sow. We live in God's humble abodes and we reside where we feel it is best for us to prosper in peace and in unity. As we live below the skies, let faith and hope carry us from one place of endeavor to another challenge. Life is a test and you passed all your tests with flying colors, Officer Cook. Faith and hope really do exist if one applies them to their daily lives and in their achievements of undertaking. You were by character the quintessential professional, the consummate police officer guided by humility, dignity and bravery never to be underscored. Your legacy is entrenched with morals and decency that can never be usurped. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

All that we gratefully have is because of what Our Creator has given to our parents. We commit to sharing with others, we endeavor to feed those less fortunate than us. We cloth those who need. God gives us the gift of life and it is in that power that we try to restore, uplift and safeguard this very valuable resource. As holy people we come together in times of joy and in sorrow. We remind ourselves of all that blossoms and blooms, for it is in Your power to nourish and provide life, meaning and substance to all. All of your life, Officer Cook, you worked hard to provide for yourself and your beloved wife, Karen. Your honor, your dignity and firm integrity assisted you through your patrols of Dade County streets where you were revered and admired by all. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. For the time you were here in this world doing good deeds and living a healthy life, being a devout gentleman and most importantly remaining humble is how you'll always be remembered.

Thank God for wonderfully courageous and intellectually thinking and fast thinking brave women and men of the law enforcement field. Officer Cook, you were one of the many brothers and sisters who decided when you were young people to become a police officer. With skill, humility and hard work and an arduous schedule you stayed the course, persevered and did become a truly qualified public servant that all Dade County residents came to know, admire and respect. Humble, helpful and humane, words that stick to a person's character like putting concrete and cement together. They help bond each other together. After all, liberty, peace and unity are the necessary means and tools by which all people come together even in times of crisis and misfortune. You were there for six devoted and dedicated years of service with a smile. You honored and respected authority. You understood what it took to get the assignment done right and properly the first time. You meant the world to all people, your family, colleagues and many personal friends. You believed in yourself and it was your maturity and fairness that allowed you the opportunity to lead other comrades. You were quite likable and very engaging, comrades smiled, they laughed and when it was time to go out on the streets to patrol, the air of solemnness could be located all around you. I was not there that awful day of May 16, 1979, but I can only imagine the perils that you, Officer Cook, your partner that day, Reserve Officer Scott Lincoln and your comrades from the Central Division, Officers DIGenova and Edgerton must have been facing. When troubled people are out there with a weapon, whatever they possess, there is no telling with might transpire. You did your part, though not dispatched, your answered the call of duty as calmly and as rationally as you could. A situation you handled many times before, as stated you were good at domestic calls and it was your humility that saw and steered you through to a peaceful resolution. Now God has you in His safekeeping to watch over His golden streets and help Him protect those who assumed your post with the same braveness, honesty and compelling dignity and vital integrity. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. A life cut too short, a watch that ended, a legacy to be eternally continued and perpetuated all by your love and humbleness to serve and never to be forgotten. Officer Cook, you were a true hero and a valued member of society.

Integrity is a word that can denote various meanings. Intuitive, neat and organized, terrific, energetic, gregarious, resourceful, intellectual, timing and yearning, all words that somehow must find their way into every police officer's jargon. To be able to safeguard the public interest as a loyal and faithful public servant, one must declare their going to be honest in all their professional dealings with the public and foremost be of dignified character with no personal axes so to speak to grind. To sum things up, Officer Cook, this was the way you handled all situations in your personal life and at work. It surely never led you astray. You were present to lend a helping hand whenever called upon and your bravery, courage and valor most always circumvented any problems that may have arisen. The citizens of Dade County have spoken and they have come to expect nothing less from their heroines and heroes of which forever you will remain. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero.

You were number one in the hearts of all, you still are number one, one of God's humble angels watching over us for eternity where nothing will ever harm you, you should never have been harmed to begin with as you too had rights and a life with many unfulfilled plans yet to complete. Your family members will try to fortify and finish the work you left behind and carry on your legacy very proudly, loudly and with great resolve.

As we light candles at our tables, may our toils of labor uplift our spirits as we give thanks to Our Lord who has created this world. The wine we drink is one of our sources of life, the bread and other fine foods we consume remind us to thank God for giving us His bounty. We wash our hands, which calls to mind the holiness of our bodies, our hands which touch the food we pick up to eat. We offer a prayer over bread our main staple and after we eat and are satisfied we bless the Lord for all His rations. It is the source that comes from the earth and provides us with nourishment to satisfy our souls as they sustain us in times of distress and hunger. From all that you meant to this world, Officer Cook, I'm quite sure as devout as you and Karen were you offered your prayers both day and night. You were raised devoutly Catholic and the lessons between your religion and other religions are how we can maintain dignity and honor in all of our lives. Constant practice helps to maintain us from wickedness which brave people like yourself help to quell. The Metro-Dade Police Department and all Dade County residents certainly can be glad for its heroes and heroines of yesterday, today and tomorrow. You calmed people in times of excitement which headed off more dire consequences. Respected, admired, loved by your family and most certainly missed by all. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero. As we get ready to sit down to our next meals, let us stop and gives thanks for humbly bodied public servants such as yourself, Officer Cook. Your parents as I've said many times would be extremely proud of your heroic feats of action in serving and protecting. Your life and career indeed were a mirror image of one another. it's no mirage you were there when the going got tough. It's those who are disciplined enough that can prepare and offer the most assistance to others. You were one of the many who were properly trained to go out and do battle with this element of evil.

May we seek the rewards of heaven for having done all this is prudent and proper in the eyes of all. We ask for Your blessings God for giving us the power to both meet and greet all folks. Our tables have been set for all including our foes to meet and discuss our differences. We give thanks for both your life and police career, Officer Cook and the infectious spirit you maintained while happily overseeing the dignity of one and all. May we not ever lose sight nor touch with those loving public servants who have given their lives in courage. bravery and valor for our liberties to continue. The simple pleasures of life, the joys we experience have never been lost since that day of May 16, 1979, when you, Officer William C. Cook, made the ultimate sacrifice that has and will always enhance the landscape of the Dade County community where you were revered, respected, cherished and treasured. Rest in peace my neighbor, friend and hero, it's those simple pleasures and joys that you should still be taking part of with your family members. You are missed very much!
