Reading about the death of Master Trooper Steven J. Perry is heartbreaking. He was killed when his patrol vehicle was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver while he was out doing his job in the early morning hours. It’s a tragic reminder of how dangerous the roadways can be, even for the officers whose job it is to keep them safe.

Master Trooper Perry served with the North Carolina Highway Patrol for nearly seven years, dedicating himself to protecting the people traveling those same roads every day. Troopers spend countless hours on highways responding to crashes, assisting motorists, and trying to prevent tragedies before they happen. Sadly, in this case, he became the victim of the very danger he worked to protect others from.

After 29 years in law enforcement, I know how much time officers spend on the road and how unpredictable drivers can be. Incidents like this are a painful reminder that every decision made behind the wheel matters. Driving the wrong way, driving impaired, or simply not paying attention can destroy lives in seconds.

Master Trooper Perry also leaves behind a 9-month-old daughter who will grow up knowing her father as a hero who gave his life while serving others. That kind of loss is impossible to measure.

His death should serve as a reminder to all of us to slow down, pay attention, never drive impaired, and make responsible choices behind the wheel. One moment of carelessness can change lives forever.

God Speed, Master Trooper Perry.
