To the family of Sergeant Terri Sweeting Mashkow, Sheriff Flowers, to each and every one of the dedicated men & women of the Indian River County Sheriff's Department,
My deepest sympathy to each of you for the burden you will forever carry after the loss of your loved one, your partner, your co-worker and your friend as a result of a senseless tragedy.
There are no words to offer that can adequately lessen your pain. There are some who believe time will lessen the pain of your loss. We all handle grief differently, and it is my hope each of you will allow yourself the time to grieve in your own way, and if you need help through this process I urge you to seek it.
There's no better way to honor the loss of Sergeant Terri Sweeting Mashkow than by allowing your grief and your loss to become better and to do better in every way you can, in everything you do.
For some it takes the loss of a fellow Deputy, a co-worker, a mentor, a friend to realize the ultimate cost of following your calling to become a Police Officer.
You know when you hear someone use the words "Routine Call" they simply do not understand. Don't be upset when you hear it, instead educate them that there's no such thing in Law Enforcement.
To those with the Indian River County Sheriff's Department, or any Police Officer or Sheriff's Deputy who may read this, the loss of Sergeant Terri Sweeting Mashkow is a reminder there will be no routine calls and no routine traffic stops, no routine anything. Even the most prepared can fall victim to the ultimate cost of following your calling.
The nature of the work you do guarantees you the opportunity to learn every single day. Share your lessons with your peers. And if you're fortunate to be an FTO, you have an obligation to share every lesson with those you're training. And if the day should ever come when you feel there are no new lessons for you to learn, please see that as the red flashing sign that it's time for you to Retire.
Finally, keep the family of Sergeant Terri Sweeting Mashkow in your prayers. Beyond that I would urge you to never stop checking on her family, even a quick call to say hi, to ask if they need anything, making sure they're okay. They will always be part of your family, and it's up to you to make sure they never forget that you're there for them.
That's just one example of honoring her sacrifice by being better and doing better.
Also, it may not always feel like it, but a lot more of the community you serve cares about you.
RIP Sergeant Terri Sweeting Mashkow! I sincerely hope your family and loved ones can someday accept you were called home to continue serving for a higher purpose.
