In the very, very early 1900s Mennonites were invited by the Russian government to come from what became Germany and farm in the Ukraine and be exempt from military service. I understand they walked there. Several generations later the exemption was revoked and Peter Gaede and family sailed into New York, no Elias Island, got on a train and went to Kansas where the farms were waiting. Peter was my great paternal grandfather. Peter was buried in Kansas around a hundred years ago. One of his sons, my grandfather John P Gaede became an elder in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was born in the Ukraine in 1871 and participated in the Oklahoma Land Rush and voted for Grover Cleveland for President. There are lots of Gaedes in Kansas and California.

I can see Gaede all over this beautiful young man's face. May he rest in peace. May his survivors persevere and prosper.

Undersheriff Gaede ,

I'm saddened to learn of you loss. Thank you so much for your service to the people of Phillips County. You are a true hero. You had the presence of mind to return fire while being shot and you stopped the suspect. I will pray for your wife and children, as well as for the rest of your family, friends, loved ones and colleagues. Rest in peace.

Undersheriff Gaede, a police officer, should be remembered not by how he died but by how he lived! A brave man has left to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you for your 8 years of commitment to law enforcement, your family, and the Phillips County Sheriff's Office . Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace, Brother!

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

Rest Brother, we will take it from here. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Ephesians 6:11 I retired shortly after the Undersheriff started at Phillips County, his in-laws though, i knew them well, great Officers as I’m sure the Undersheriff was too. This needs to stop, attacking officers, disrespecting them. It needs to end!
