I knew Deng. We worked together in the same small LAPD unit in 2002. He was always happy and motivated. That was unusual in those difficult years, weathering the Rampart scandal and other trials. He spoke both Mandarin and Korean and was always ready to help another cop with a joke and advice.

Nothing seemed to faze him.

Today's news wounds me, in that small private place where cops don't talk about to civilians.
Deng always enjoyed policing. It showed every day.

Rest easy, brother.
From your name, I know you, like me, made the courageous journey to immigrate to America. We both chose to serve this country in uniform, to stand on the thin blue line.

Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. My deepest condolences to your family and loved ones.

With honor and respect,
Lieutenant Whitman Liu

Sergeant Deng, a police officer, should be remembered not by how he died but by how he lived! A brave man has left to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you for your 26 years of commitment to law enforcement, your family, and the Los Angeles Police Department. Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace, Brother!
