To Sheriff Chip Shuler, Deputy Hunter Reedy's family, all personnel of the Smyth County Sheriff Department, and to all other members of the Smyth County law enforcement community,

Please accept my deepest condolences on the tragic loss of Deputy Hunter Reedy while performing his official duties in service to his beloved community. The death of Deputy Reedy and the wounding of his fellow Smyth County deputy are terrible reminders to all of us of how dangerous the job of a law enforcement officer is.

Four words are used most often to describe the job duties of all law enforcement agencies and officers, "to protect and serve". Please take a moment to look more closely at the meaning of two of those words: Protect-keep safe from harm or injury, to preserve. Serve - to do work that aids individuals, governments, communities and society. The men and women who choose to make law enforcement their profession, do so with an extremely deep commitment to the definitions of those two words no matter the cost.

Unfortunately, there are times that a third word is also used to describe the action taken by many of our brave, selfless heroes in uniform, sacrifice. On Friday evening, August 9, 2024, shortly after 5 pm Smyth County Virginia Deputy Sheriff Hunter Reedy made the ultimate sacrifice in the protection and service of his community and to his fellow law enforcement officers. May his love for, and his commitment to, his community and fellow officers never be forgotten.
