I am sorry to have read about his loss but hopefully did bring some pride to his family and agency as I announced his name at that rainy vigil!

This year I attended the National Law Enforcement Candle Light Vigil in Washington DC. It was cold and the rain did not cease the entire ceremony. I was ill prepared for this as I only had on a pair of khaki slacks and a polo shirt. I sat in my seat next to my colleagues as we prepared to honor one of our own (Gabriel J. Torres : Raleigh PD). I heard the voice of a woman behind me say that she had an additional poncho in her bag and offered it to me. This poncho in that moment meant more than just the recycled plastic, it was the gift of warmth; compassion; and gratitude. She was so kind and generous in her actions to not only me but many others around her as she handed out additional ponchos to those around us in my situation. I began to wonder what kind of woman would give to so many without anything in return my suspicion grew and I felt in that moment that this was the act and love of none other than a mother. A mother that is grieving and has lost a son yet is still eager to give back still. The strength of a mother the mother of Deputy Reckling.

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.
There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to the family and colleagues in this great time of need. I ask that we continue to think of all who are suffering from this terrible loss and lean into God for comfort and peace.
Thank You for your husband, your father and for his devotion to serve. Bless you for sharing him with us. We pray for your comfort and ask for His favor for you all.
2Cor. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
2Cor. 1:4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
