A Hero was laid to rest today. He was not a famous someone-or-other. He was not a politician, diplomat, ambassador, or president of this country, or of any other country. He was not a race car driver, football or basketball player, coach, or play-by-play announcer. Nor was he a television or movie actor, radio personality, musician, thespian, or writer. He was not any of those people. So who was he?
He was a police officer. He was a person who patrolled our streets, stopping us when we were speeding or driving erratically.
He played games of "pick-up" with the neighborhood kids, made a child happy with a smile or a hug, consoled a family after they lost their house to a fire, took our reports after a crime was committed, and sometimes protected us from ourselves.
And always, he put his life on the line when a dangerous criminal was on the loose, fired his weapon only in self-defense and then felt bad because he had to fire his weapon, and first, last and always, protected the people he served with his life.
What is a Hero? It is someone who is afraid to do what he knows he must, yet finds the courage to go forward and onward. He respects the people whom he has promised to protect, and who is respected in return.
A Hero is stedfast, honest, trustworthy and selfless. He always tells the truth, even when it hurts to do so.
A Hero was laid to rest today. He gave his life to protect and defend our lives, and he lost that life in the line of duty. Yet if you asked him, he would not consider himself a Hero, but merely another policeman who performed his duty to the best of his ability.
And for that, we call him a Hero. Rest in Peace, Hero. It is our turn to protect you now.
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant. I have put thee in charge over a few things, and thou hast prospered over much. Enter, thou, into the joy of thy Lord."
