I read in the USMS Monitor that you sang a John Denver song while on long runs at the Academy. Candidly, I had never heard the song but, I familiarized myself with it after reading the article.
I recently took part in a mud run called the Tough Mudder in Colorado. It's an 11+ mile race with about 25 different obstacles. While on one of the trails jogging along I heard someone I never met start singing that song. I, of course, thought of you. As we jogged along I told her your story and how much you inspire me. I thanked her for reminding me of your service and sacrifice and I hope she found a little inspiration in you to finish the race as well. Thanks again for everything, you are still not forgotten.

My thoughts are with all of your loved ones and close friends as they face each day without you. Continue to keep close watch over your loved ones and protect them from harm. I know how your Mom feels every day for I walk in her shoes. I'd like to leave the following for her to let her know she is not alone:

"The sense of loss does not diminish with time. In truth, the expression 'time heals all wounds' is a myth. For parents, the loss of a child is permanent and mental scar tissue really does not grow over the grim memory. Rather, all tears are expended and a dull ache remains."

The Federal Center in Clarksburg WV was renamed the Derek W. Hotsinpiller Federal Center on Friday 06/08/12, with a ceremony held in his honor. The ceremony was attended by friends, family, colleagues and stretched more than half a city block. Dereks' brother Dustin, an officer with the Bridgeport PD said he and his family had feelings of guilt when told of the efforts to rename the federal center in his brother's honor as though too much was coming too quickly. But he expressed appreciation at the level of community support that has been shown since his brother's death and vowed that after Friday’s ceremony, they no longer want to commemorate Derek's death, but rather to celebrate his life and service to the community.

I too had the honor of riding for Derek through Law Enforcement United. This was my first ride of this type and I called on Derek quite often to pull me through. I know how his family and friends felt them and now because I lost a close friend and co-worker in April of last year. Due to the hectic schedule on Sunday (May 13th) I was not able to speak to his immediate family, but I did get to meet his Academy class at the vigil. I have since made contact with his mother. We'll never forget you, and you will live forever in our hearts.

I will be riding for Derek on Wednesday the 9th of May in the Police Unity Tour. This event is to honor the fallen officers killed in the line of duty. Derek is not forgotten and I will be wearing his bracelet in the 4 days I ride to Washington DC. I hope I will get to meet a family members or friends of Derek this Saturday the 12th of May.

I turn 24 in a few weeks and stories like this hit really hard to me. It's sad to think that this man had to die for some retard wanting to sell drugs. I hope they hang the man that did this for the world to see.

Prayers to the family...

Derek,
As time came closer to the passing of a year since you've left us, all I could think about was how brave a young man has to be to take a position like yours in law enforcement... And how we forget to show our appreciation to officers for protecting our lives by putting their own on the line. You are a hero. May you RIP.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Rest In Peace

My reflections sorrow for the family, the force, & his friends. I repeat Mr, Kotke's post. You were a hero and we are grateful you chose to serve.
Police in all positions help keep us all safe. You deserve combat pay and I'm always relieved when I meet a retired officer. They made it through alive & I thank them, when I can.
Another reflection is dismay & rage that this happened. I must remember, though, we weren't promised a walk in the park on this earth.

Derek, although I never had the honor to meet you, I have learned so many great things about the amazing person, friend, son, brother and marshal you are through your many family and friends. I am thankful for all you have done to protect this country. I know that you are truly missed everyday by so many, but I know you are keeping your fellow marshal's safe from above. God Bless you and your family. Rest in Peace.

Next week marks the anniversary of you being taken from this earth so tragically. And as I reflect on this, I remember the many times when I too entered a residence after someone, and how so easily it could have ended differently for me.

You went into that house because it was what we were paid to do. Because we had to be there for our partners and other officers. Because someone needed to be taken off the street. Because it was what we loved doing!

We never met personally, and yet, I know you as a brother. A brother whose kinship was sharing the same type of job, and facing the same dangers. A brother "worthy of going through a door with".

Rest in Peace my brother.

Pam, I have been thinking of you, and just wanted you to know. The holidays were hard for us and I'm sure they were hard for your family also. We have that blessed hope of seeing our boys again. You and your family are in my prayers. God Bless.

Recently I made a decision to be involved and around other people who are involved with cocaine. A friend of mine recommended I read these reflections as a way of seeing the other side of the drug issue. In the past I have recreationally used drugs and failed to see just how it impacted others. Not just those around me but also those in the community and those who serve the community. In reading all of these reflections I have been gravely reminded that the war on drugs has a permanent impact on the men and women who fight to keep our children and neighborhoods safe as well as their families and friends. One woman mentioned that we need to have better education for children about drugs. I would add we also need to show our children how far reaching these decisions can be. May others learn the way I have over the last few days. I extend my deepest apologies and condolences to Deputy Marshal Hotsingpillers family and fiance for a son, a friend, a lover taken too soon. And a huge thank you to the police forces across our nation who continue his work.

Dustin, I just learned of your loss through the Fly Rod Chronicles show. What an amazing trip. What a way to honor the memory of your brother! I inherited my father's fly fishing tackle, I think of him every time I pick up a fishing rod. When you caught a trout on your brother's rod it brought tears to my eyes.

Thank you Derek for you ultimate sacrifice, and thank you to Dustin and the Hotsinpiller family for your service and sacrifice as well.
