Reflections for Lieutenant Gary Edward Dudley
Where to start...Gary, I will always remember you. Your heart was as pure as any I have ever met. I will never forget that first year when Bruce put the Unity Tour together and your ride to DC. What an incredible journey. I worried so much about all of you, I thought I would never survive! When you took over and made the decision to ride for Indiana survivors, to give the money to those who needed a hand up...when so much was made about the wall, and you saw the bigger picture, that made you special to so many survivors. You understood our journey. I'll never forget you coming to our picnic with a $7000 check for Ohio COPS. That made such an impact on so many lives. And they all remember you for that. I have shed many tears since last week, and I will shed many more. I received an email from Abby Corder today. She received an email from you the week before you died. It was a "chain" email, expressing your love of God. She shared it with all of us. You see, Gary road for Deputy Tanner, who was gunned down in the line of duty in Zanesville, OH in 2000. Gary rode to DC in his honor, as well as the other officers who had given the ultimate sacrifice. It was in Zanesville that you met Abby. She has shed many tears for you. But that's what you did, you made people love you because of your heart. Always giving, giving, giving. I remember you riding your bike at the memorial for 24 hours to raise awareness for "your" cause. That cause was us. The survivors. I moved on from Ohio COPS ~ after giving over 8 years of service to Ohio's survivors. I have moved out west to start a new life. But one thing I have learned ~ you can never outrun the pain of losing a friend. I think about all of the people I have met in the past years with my involvement with COPS, and losing you has made me very aware of how fragile life is, and how quickly it can be taken away. I don't take anything for granted, but now that you are gone, I will vow once again to live for today and thank god he gave me one more to cherish. We will take care of Carolyn. She unfortunately has entered into one of the most caring, loving families that no one ever wants to be a part of. You have my word, we will help her through the rough times, and we will help her to remember the good ones. You will live forever in all of our hearts. You were my true hero...and I will always love you.

My prayers go out to Gary's family, friends and colleagues. Gary and I went to grade school, high school and college together and I can tell you he was always the steadiest of friends. He was kind, good and always looking out for others, something that obviously stuck with him all these years.
As a kid, Gary was the big guy, stronger than most of us and always a good athelete. But Gary was the big guy who wasn't afraid to pick a little guy to be on his team, friendship was more important than your atheletic abilities. He was the guy who led the fast break and then dished off to someone else to let them take the shot. He was the guy who played for the joy of the game and to prove just how good he could be.
Your friends everywhere will miss you Gary, but your legacy of kindness, support and friendship live on. God bless!

Gary,
My great friend. I cried all day when I was given the news. I cry now as I leave this reflection. You were true to heart, and true in spirit. You had a wonderful sense of humor. In the time that I met you, I became a better man, husband, father, and police officer because of my association, and friendship with you. You were truely my brother in every sense of the word. You are my hero. Those times on the bicycle from Indy to DC, and aound this great State will never be forgotten. The lessons that you taught are ever lasting. Such a tragic loss to your wonderful wife, Carolyn. Such a tragic loss for us all. You and Chief Martin are in a much better place. Know that the Law Enforcement family that you left behind is vast. We will care for your family. We will continue your work. You will never be far from my thoughts. You will never be forgotten. My family loves you. We love Carolyn. You were there for us all. We will be there for you. I love you my brother! Ride On!!!

The Indiana State Police has lost an irreplaceable Trooper, Commander, and above all else, a great person. Lt. Dudley was caring, loyal, and passionate about what he believed in. He was the standard in which all troopers should strive to become. I will always remember his parting remarks of "Stay Alert, Stay Alive!" to all of the recruits as we departed for our weekend liberties. May God bless the Dudley family. You will be in my prayers. Goodspeed Sir.

To Lt.Dudley's family and friends,
I know I don't need to tell you how special of a man Gary was. He was a great example of what the Lord meant when he told us to love one another. His devotion to the people of Indiana and families of officers who died is unmeasurable. He was a true professional when he instructed us at the academy. I could tell that he was concerned about our training and especially us. I am deeply saddened by his passing and am praying for all of you. Blessed are those who are peacekeepers. He will never be forgotten in my heart.

We are so sorry to here about your tragic loss of a loved one in law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in support. As we personally know, sometimes there is little comfort that comes from words. Keep focused as you can on the memories and joyous times for these things may bring you comfort. Rely heavily on family, friends, and other law enforcement. Honor your fallen loved one, for their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Lt. Dudley, you will be sadley missed. One, as a molder of men in your role at the academy and two, as my friend.
When it came to PT you gave new meaning to "lets do a few". Future charity rides will be lonely despite hundreds of people being around. You defined what it means to be a professional and a loyal friend. I am sadened that you were called home and I am better off for having known you. Thank you for your example and your friendship.

We once again have lost a part of the brotherhood of law enforcement. These times are difficult and the family and department has a long road of recovery ahead of them. The staff of Cops Evangelist Ministries would like you to know that we are and will continue to pray for you in this time of sorrow. Remember that God will not give you more then you can handle. Philippians 4:13 says…I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me.
