Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Joseph Raymond Pokorny, Jr.

You don't remember me, do you...?
I was the one who unlocked your car after you accidentally locked the keys and your baby up at the mall.
I was the one who gave you a ride to the gas station when you ran out of gas on that back road.
I was the one who changed your tire because you couldn't figure out how to work the stupid scissor jack.
I was the one who directed you safely through that busy intersection when the traffic signals weren't working.
I was the one who gave you a jump-start after you left your lights on.

You don't remember me, do you...?
I was the one who found the item that identified the guy who raped your daughter.
I was the one who spent my days off in court to testify and help convict the man who beat your son so badly.
I was the one who located your grandmother in the woods that night when it was 22 degrees and she had wandered away from the nursing home.
I was the one who loaned you the raincoat the night we stood and watched your house burn.
I was the one who talked with you for two hours about your son running away from home.

You don't remember me, do you...?
I was the one who held your hand, wiped the blood out of you eyes, and calmed you down while the Fire Department cut you out of what was left of your car.
I was the one who called you at 2 a.m. to come pick up your 16 year old daughter because she had been drinking too much.
I was the one who knocked on your door at 4 a.m. to let you know your 16 year old daughter would never be coming home again.
I was the one who did CPR on your 3 year old after you found him in the pool.
I was the one who helped deliver your new baby when you didn't quite make it to the ER.

You don't remember me, do you...?
I was the one who got that snake out of your bathroom around midnight.
I was the one who got my knees and elbows scraped up fighting with the shoplifter with your carton of cigarettes.
I was the one who took your son for a "ride-along" so he could see what it was really like.
I was the one who gave you the right directions so you wouldn't miss that business meeting.
I was the one who stopped you to let you know your right rear tire was going flat.

You don't remember me, do you...?
I was the one who escorted your son's funeral procession from the church to the cemetery and cried behind my sunglasses because he was my friend, too.
I was the one watched over your place while you were on vacation.
I was the one who worked for you on Christmas Day so you could be off with your family.
I was the one who joked around with you after your truck got hit by a train and you walked away without a scratch.
I was the one was able to talk your husband into going into counseling with you.

You don't remember me, do you...?
I was the one who got shot when I pulled over a car for a traffic violation and the driver turned out to be an escaped convict who had sworn he would never go back to prison.
Oh, by the way, my memorial service is at 2 p.m.

Will you remember me now?

I will remember you!! RIP

Dear Pokorny Family:
You have just joined a tight knit group that no one wants to join... the national family of fallen officers. We humbly thank our Pennsylvania Troopers for their courage to serve and protect. We lost our young officer (Officer Ryan Cappelletty from Erie, PA) as he served in Chesterfield County, VA.

Please know we grieve with you as family. From near and far away those of us who have lost brave young men and women know your grief and stand with you.

Be comforted that God knows our times and God knows that your Joe is one of our heroes. Lean on your police family as they guide you through the days to come. Lean on the Lord to give you strength. Reach out for help when you need it.

There is a thin blue line that protects us. May we never forget Joe's police service to each of us. We care about you! Ellen, Bradford, PA

Lord,
He was yours to give,
and yours to call home,
please stand by his brothers,
so they don't feel alone,
dry the tears of his family,
so they clearly see:
that he gave his all,
so all could have peace.
Blessed are they,
the children of God,
with heavy hearts,
and honor they trod,
to pay their respects,
to give their salute,
and to ask for your mercy,
on heroes in Blue.

Troop, rest easy brother, we have the watch.

Corporal Pokorny is a hero and a brave law enforcement officer who was taken from this earth and from his family by a coward. I thank Joseph Pokorny for his service to his community and the people of Pennsylvania owe him a debt of gratitude for his sacrifice. May he rest easy and may the Lord provide comfort to his wife and children during this difficult time. As someone who has lost a dear friend in the line of duty I know it hurts terribly. You will never forget and you should'nt but the pain will ease with time. God speed Corporal Pokorny.

Although, geographically many of us are not currently with the family, friends, and "brothers and sisters" of Cpl. Pokorny; many of us across the state and country have been on an emotional roller-coaster, ranging from anger to sadness as we deal with the loss from our ranks. However, I rest a little easier knowing that we will NEVER rest until justice is served. We will not fail!

May God Bless your family Cpl. Pokorny.

Our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Corp. Pokorny and to his comrades in the PA State Police. We hope the words below will ease some of the pain.

"AFTER"
After the snow of winter,
Spring will surely come,
Bringing warmth and beauty
Of blossoms and birdsong.

After the rain, the swallow
Will soar again on high,
And a rainbow follow
In a sunlit sky.

After the tears of sorrow,
Spirits will renew,
And a bright tomorrow
With God's help will see you through.

May you receive strength from these words and from knowing there are many people who appreciate the sacrifices law enforcement agencies make every day to keep us safe. God bless you!

Feeling rage and sadness I write this reflection. I never spoke with Corporal Pokorny and the closest I have ever been to him was the night of his tragic death. I have slowed several times in a patrol unit while passing him on a traffic stop and always got a friendly smile and "OK" signal. If I told you I wanted to be there when he stopped that car would be a lie, the truth is I would have been there. I along with many policemen wish they could have been with him, hoping for a different ending with good arrest. Cpl.Pokorny once performed a brave action for Patrol Officers, and close friends, from my department and his fellow Troopers. His performance prevented injury to others , only to be injured himself. By all accounts Cpl.Pokorny was a "Top Shelf" Trooper, Supervisor, Friend and Father. I am certain that a long line of police would love to see that friendly smile and "OK" once again. I admire Corporal J.R.Pokorny and the men and women like him. He is a model that all police should copy and attempt to duplicate. Cpl.Pokorny has now joined the ranks of many who have left us tragedy, only to leave us in sadness and rage.

God Bless

To the family, friends and co-workers go my deepest condolences. A this time of year when we celebrate the birth of the Saviour, it is hard to celebrate another another angel on the heavenly force, but we all will feel his presence whenever we make a stop.
