To those who worked with and loved Patrolman Scott Armstrong, I want to extend my most heart felt condolences. We really do feel your pain. The Columbus PD buried Officer Melissa Foster (EOW 12/04/2004) in December. Melissa was the single mother of two children. Her crusier was also hit head on by a drunk driver, while she was responding on a non-emergency run.

Just the day before Patrolman Armstrong was killed we buried an academy classmate of mine, Officer Bryan S. Hurst. He was shot and killed in a bank robbery. He was just 33 YOA and left behind a wife and a six month old baby girl.

Take comfort in the knowledge that Patrolman Armstrong is in heaven, watching over us. He was doing something he loved and wouldn't want us to grieve. Even though grieve we will, for a life cut short, a loved one taken too soon, a hero lost. This poem was left on Officer Hurst's reflections, I thought it was appropriate and would like to share it with you all.

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.
