Po Sledge and I worked the scooter chart together,,, Sledge was assigned to the 69, I was in HPD.... he was relentless in keeping the streets safe.
I admired his approach to police work and his dedication was unsurpased.
I lost many nights sleep after his death. Our charts overlapped except for saturday... I was RDO on that unforgettable day... Cant express how many times I would think,,, if only I was working that day....
RIP my brother...

I was there that night
Dark, snowy, cold
A passenger in my teens
Sitting at a red light in my friends new trans am
Sitting in the opposite direction
Waiting, watching horrified
A police car approaches
The police car perpendicularly blocks the car opposite us
Officer approaches the window, flashlight out
Bang Bang ohhh my god
Officer falls car reverses
Officer is lodged under his front bumper
Car speeds away
I am shocked
I open the car door and run
I am in the police car
Another car makes a u turn causing an accident
The other car pursues the shooter
I follow
What am I doing
I follow in the police car
In the snow
In the dark
In the horror
History.
Some things in life stay with you.
Sorry.

I was one of the auxiliary police officers from the 69 pct that responded to a 10,13 that Sledge was involved in at the school on 85 st and Flatlands Ave on Thursday night. On Monday night Sledge was dragged to his death. I will always remember Sledge as a friend and someone to look up to. May good rest his soul.

Its sad not to see more reflections from police friends/co-workers of Cecil's, from the 69, he was truely one of a kind. He worked with a Black friend, Benie Fyre, and together they drove Capt Friedman crazy. He'd send them North and the Black community complained (they were too tough). He'd send them South and the Italians and Jews complained (they were too tough). Mainly they were just doing their jobs and breaking up the Hang-outs. All of his co-workers loved him and Benie. They were both great cops!
Its hard to believe so much time has passed since that night with "Crazy Sal", but Cecil's death brought many of us to face our our mortality. I respected Cecil as one of the toughest men I ever knew and I realized if this could happen to him it could happen to anyone who wears a badge. Sal should have been given "Death", life is too good for him!
