Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

I was one of the CB operators the night Officer Rose was murdered. I lived on County Line Road and drove past the bowling alley everyday on my way home. I learned that night that Police Officers don't get paid for what they do, but for what they might have to do and that is lay your life on the line protecting those we serve. Richard, rest in peace and thank you for your service.

I went to Farmingdale high school with Richie Rose. When I was in H.S Richie was working at County Line Bowling alley. He told me he was leaving his part time job and I replaced Richie. I saw Richie in Dec. 1971 and I told him I was starting in the NCPD academy on Jan. 14, 1972. He told me he really enjoys being a Nassau County Police Officer. He wished me good luck and said he was proud to be a Nassau County Police Officer. I ended up assigned to the 8th precinct assigned to the Farmingdale area. Every time I passed the County Line Bowling Alley , I would remember back to us both working at the bowling alley where he was unfortunately murdered. Richie was proud to be a NCPD Police Officer and I was glad to have known such a fine young man.

I had arrived at the sense and he was gone however, I did take a statement from a NYPD Officer who had witnessed the shooting. He was not in possession his off duty revolver! I put out a notification as to the prep. I recall being sick to death .
I remember Richard every year, to this date. I am now 72 years and I will never forget that occurrence.

Richie and I were academy classmates starting our careers, Richie as a Police Cadet and I as a Patrolman on September 1, 1967. Seeing each other for three months every day, the class became like a family as we all became good friends. I remember him well as a quiet well versed person and remember congratulating him once he went into blues. Was a total shock to me when I heard of his shooting. The funeral service was a very emotional episode to lay to rest one of our own. Rest In pease Richie. Never forgotten.

Was a brand new CPU (BSO)cop and was working the phones at the command post. Insp Hockstrasser (sp?) was running the show at the time. Received the telephone call from the CPU team that the bag guy was in custody. Cant remember being more grateful and happy. Will never forget that moment.

I was a cadet in NCPD and received my blues two weeks after Richie. Worked 12x8 the night he was killed. I didn'tknow him but am affected till this day by his death he was the first officer killed in the line of duty in my career. I was 17 at the time of Richie's death. I remember it like yesterday when my brother was telling my mother and father. My brother Frank & Richie were friends. I remember the times Richie was at our house. Tall & quiet is how I remember him. 45 years later and the father of 4. Two of my sons are members of the NYPD. As proud as I am of them....everyday I have always asked Richie to watch over them. Rest In Peace. I will never forget.

I was working in the NYPD/ESU on patrol in Harlem when the city wide dispatcher broadcasted the alarm for the shooting and later the homicide of a NCPD officer. I returned to my command and called Richie's house, his father answered the call and said Richie was working. A sick feeling began burning in my chest after that call, I then called the 8th Pct and was told that the Officer killed was Richie Rose. It was a sad, sad night that repeated itself many times during my 30 years in the NYPD, Richie was the third of thirteen Police Officers/Detectives I knew who were killed in the Line of Duty. Richie's death hit me the hardest of all being we were close friends and both 22 year old rookies. May he rest in peace.

Richard's brother Ken died yesterday. 1 day before the day Richard was killed. I can't believe it's been 45 years already. Still feels like yesterday. I am his cousin Kathy. I was there. I was 12 and it was heartbreaking for everyone then and still is today. The pain gets softer with time. The heart ache does not. At least the 2 boys are with Aunt Bea and Uncle Charlie. May they all have peace.

I recall the incident and consequent funeral vividly. A sad day with tributes paid from brother officers from numerous departments. Richard Rose's death will always be in my memory as well as the thousands of other other officers who were active at the tragedy of this young officer.
Only those who have risked their lives doing what seems to be a thankless job know how tenuous our lives can be.

Richie was a classmate of mine in the recruit class of 9/1/67. He was sworn in as a Cadet and went into blue in 1970. He was a very quiet person but always smiling. Remember the day of the incident and really hit home that someone who sat in out classroom for 3 months every day and made friends with could be taken so quickly. Think of Richie and others that have passed from our class very often. RIP Brothers.

I remember that day well.It happened two weeks before I would be appointed to the NCPD. I remember my wife being upset because he was a young man with his whole life ahead of him To this day I always think about PO Rose. Rest in Peace, you will never be forgotten.

Officer Rose was the first, unfortunately not the last, Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty during my 30 years on the job. His death bought home the fact, to this, and I'm sure other, new young Police Officers, that the badge did not make us bullet proof. RIP Richie.
