Patrolman King was shot and killed while attempting to arrest two men for trying to steal a car. Patrolman King was off duty and in civilian clothes when he noticed two men attempting to steal a parked automobile in front of 136 West 62nd Street in Manhattan. Patrolman King pursued the suspects and was shot three times during a struggle. Patrolman King was able to fire three shots from his service weapon at the fleeing suspect before collapsing to the ground.
The suspect was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison.
Patrolman King was posthumously awarded the New York City Police Department's Medal of Honor.
Patrolman King had served with the New York City Police Department for three years and was assigned to the Traffic Precinct B.
