Police Officer Marc Kahre was shot and killed following a shooting suspect.

While on patrol, Officer Kahre spotted the suspect and began to follow him as he requested backup to make a traffic stop. Before backup could arrive, the suspect suddenly stopped and opened fire, striking Officer Kahre in the head. At the same time, a second officer arrived and returned fire, striking the suspect five times and wounding him.

The suspect was able to get back into his car and drive away. He crashed the vehicle a short time later and committed suicide.

In 1977, Officer Kahre received the department's Medal of Honor for rescuing people from a burning building.

Officer Kahre had served with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for fifteen years. He was survived by his wife and two sons.

I was a news photographer at channel13. Reporter Sandy Beall and I were sent to the area on reports of a shooting. We saw Officee Kahre on his bike at a nearby convenience store and acknowledged each other with a wave. Thinking the shooter was gone we headed out. Minutes later, few blocks away were hear the call for officer down. We literally passed the shooter driving to the scene. I was 26. I immediately saw officer Kahre on the ground with an obviously fatal head wound. It was me, my reporter, Officer Kahre his back up who had just shot the killer and ran out to help his colleague.. I saw exactly where Officer Kahre was shot and that he was gone. I was totally shaken. I did my job and called our newsroom to send cameras, reporters and go into full coverage. Personally, as a young photographer I was deeply disturbed and more than a little traumatized by it. I had to go to his memorial so I didn’t have that last image of him in the street. I think of Officer Kahre often and pray for him and his family. May he rest in peace and I hope his family has been blessed in the years since his murder. I will never forget. I love there’s a school named for him. That experienced changed me forever.
