Sergeant Pressley Humphrey succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained on May 21st, 1964, while responding to a shots fired call at a residence.
As he and his partner approached the home the occupant exited and opened fire, wounding Sergeant Humphrey. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to the wounds on June 7th, 1965.
The original call was later determined to be a prank call. The man who shot Sergeant Humphrey was charged with manslaughter.
Sergeant Humphrey had served with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for 12 years.
