Patrolman Charles Graham was shot and killed while questioning two suspicious men on Ninth Street, near Brunswick Street.
He observed the two men carrying a large bag and walking from the nearby West Shore railroad yards. One of the men was a known criminal. As Patrolman Graham began to question them about their activities the known criminal drew a weapon and shot him in the chest.
Despite being wounded, Patrolman Graham was able to walk to a police call box and alerted other officers. He was taken to a hospital where he died two days later.
The bag the men were carrying contained several fire extinguishers that had been stolen from passenger coaches in the railroad yard. The man who shot him was arrested the following morning. Two weeks later he was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life.
