Policeman Delmar Cook was shot and killed by a mentally disturbed person at 4800 W 48th Street.
The 46-year-old man had forced several poison pills down his wife's throat and then threatened to kill a doctor who had come to the home to treat her. The doctor called the police department, and Policeman Cook arrived with several other officers moments later.
Policeman Cook was shot in the stomach with a .45 caliber pistol as the officers attempted to subdue the subject. The man was found guilty of second-degree murder, but the charges were dismissed after the judge ruled him to be insane. The man was committed to the Mendocino State Hospital. He was released on April 4, 1951.
Policeman Cook was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was survived by his wife, daughter, and sister.
