Constable Claude Harrison was shot and killed approximately four miles from Rio Hondo after charging two men with creating a disturbance.
He had been called out to investigate a disturbance at a religious service. He had quelled the disturbance and issued two men summonses to appear in front of a justice of the peace. He confiscated a 10-inch butcher knife from one of the men and was leaving when he was shot in the back.
The subject who shot him fled into Mexico and it is not known if he was ever arrested. Three other men were held as material witnesses.
Constable Harrison had served with the Cameron County Precinct 4 Constable's Office for nine months. He was survived by his wife.
