Chief of Police Robert Freeman was shot and killed as he and several other officers attempted to arrest two wanted men.
The men opened fire, killing Chief Freeman and wounding a McIntosh County deputy and a game warden from the Georgia State Board of Game and Fish.
One of the suspects was shot and wounded and later taken into custody. The second suspect was arrested and taken to the McIntosh County Jail. Later in the night a group of angry citizens broke into the jail and shot and killed the suspect.
Chief Freeman was survived by his wife and two children.
