Malcolm Leroy Beaty

Policeman Malcolm Beaty succumbed to injuries sustained one week earlier when he was involved in a crash during a vehicle pursuit.

The car he and his partner were chasing attempted to ram the police car, causing it to crash at N. Figueroa Street and York Boulevard. Policeman Beaty suffered severe injuries and died six days later at the Central Receiving Hospital. His partner and a pedestrian were injured.

The suspect was arrested the following day. He was convicted of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and was sentenced to jail for 180 days and three years' probation. He was acquitted of second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and three counts of hit and run.

Policeman Beaty had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for nine months. Survivors include his expectant wife and two young children.
