Jailer Albert Parker succumbed to wounds sustained when he was struck in the head with an axe while supervising a chain gang on the morning of October 12, 1945.
While cutting trees on Idaho Avenue off of Highway Route 4 to repair the road at 10:30 a.m., an inmate took his ax and struck Jailer Parker in the head from behind. Then he stole his gun and fled.
Jailer Parker was transported to Mercy Hospital where he passed away two days later.
The inmate was captured a few hours later. On March 29, 1946, the suspect, 21, was convicted of murder. He was paroled on December 6, 1960.
Jailer Parker had served with the Cameron County Sheriff's Office for two weeks. He was survived by his wife and ten children.
