Captain Robbie Bishop was shot and killed while writing a citation during a traffic stop on I-20. Captain Bishop was a well-known drug interdiction officer in the state of Georgia who had set state records on interstate drug seizures.
At approximately 11:00 am he had stopped a vehicle on I-20, about 18 miles east of the Alabama state line. He was issuing a citation when the suspect shot him in the head. He was found by a passing motorist slumped over the wheel of his patrol car and then flown to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 pm.
The suspect was captured near Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in early February 1999. On February 1st, 2001, he was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Captain Bishop had served with several law enforcement agencies for a total of 12 years. During his career, he confiscated thousands of pounds of drugs and millions of dollars in drug money. He was enlisted by police departments all over the country to train their officers. He is survived by his wife and two young children.
