Deputy Sheriff Roger Strong succumbed to heat exhaustion while performing a rescue mission in the Chuckawalla Mountains foothills.
He and another deputy were searching for lost prospectors when their department Jeep broke down on a rugged trail approximately one mile off Highway 60/70 (modern-day I-10). They began to walk back towards the highway when Deputy Strong was overcome by the heat in the 111-degree heat and collapsed.
Deputy Strong had served with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department for seven months and had been in law enforcement for five years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
