Detective Scheuing was shot and killed when he and his partner interrupted a robbery in progress at a speakeasy on Lexington Avenue.
When he and his partner walked through the door, two men holding guns on the bartender and four patrons. The subjects fired several shots at the Detectives. Detective Scheuing was shot in the head and killed instantly. His partner returned fire killing one subject and wounding the other.
Detective Scheuing had served with the agency for 2 1/2 years and was assigned to the 13th Detective Squad. His father, retired New York City Police Officer John Scheulng, was credited with saving several lives when the passenger steamer, "General Slocum", caught fire and sank in the East River on June 15, 1904.
