Deputy Sheriff Harold Reis was killed when his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver at the intersection of San Gabriel River Parkway and Springland Drive.
He and his partner had just cleared from a prowler call on Springland Drive and were after a speeder when their cruiser was struck by the other vehicle. The impact caused their cruiser to overturn into a culvert. Deputy Reis was killed and his partner was seriously injured.
The 46-year-old driver was arrested and charged with felony drunk driving and manslaughter. He was tried and acquitted of both charges.
Deputy Reis had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for two years.
